Home Maintenance Items You Don’t Want to Forget!

Home ownership can be a lot of fun whether it’s picking out paint colors or landscaping a beautiful oasis but there is also maintenance that can’t be ignored or it turns into a big pain. Here are some helpful tips to stay on top of it.

1 | Hot Water Tank

Sediment collects at the bottom of the tank which in return can shorten the life span of the lower heating element. Be sure to drain the bottom of the tank at least once a year… better yet do it every 6 months!

2 | Garage Door Springs

If you have a garage chances are the door gets opened often. Maintain the garage door springs by using a can of WD-40/garage lubricant & lubricate the springs annually.

3 | Dryer Vent

Do you ever feel like doing laundry is a never-ending task? Imagine how your dryer feels! By cleaning out the dryer vent you are eliminating a fire hazard. Lint is highly flammable and it builds up inside the dryer hose as well as the outside vent. Such a simple task but so important. Make sure to regularly check & clean out if you see the lint building up.

4 | Window Wells

Window wells can build up with dried leaves and other debris which  can lead to a broken window as well as water damage. Don’t forget to check for debris and keep the window wells clear and clean.

5 | Gutters

Ideally before Winter you should check and clean out your gutter system.  Gutters accumulate dirt, leaves and other misc. debris. Clogged gutters can build up with ice and lead to possible roof damage.

6 | Furnace Filters

Changing out your furnace filters every three months (more often if you have pets) is important for the efficiency and longevity of your furnace.

7 | Fire Extinguisher

It’s a good idea to have a fire extinguisher easily accessible whether you  have a fireplace or not. Be sure to inspect your extinguisher and make sure it is adequately pressurized & has not expired.

8 | Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors

You should test your smoke & carbon monoxide detectors quarterly to ensure they are properly working. Simply press the test button & if you hear the alarm you passed! If no alarm sounds it’s time to replace the batteries or purchase a new detector.

9 | Hoses & Water Spigots

Before it starts reaching freezing temperatures be sure to disconnect your garden hoses and drain the water. Put an insulated cover over the spigot to keep it from freezing and getting a burst pipe.
